Can we disable the automated text message response?

When an adorer sends a text message to your automated phone number that the system doesn't understand, they receive an automated response like this:

Sorry, we did not understand your message. This is an automated phone number.

The essential purpose of this automatic response is to avoid confusion. Consider the following scenario:

  1. We Adore Him invites an adorer to be a substitute for 2 AM.
  2. The adorer responds with a message that the system doesn't understand, like, Sure or Okay.
  3. If the adorer doesn't receive the automated response, they might assume they should wake up in the middle of the night and attend adoration. When they find another there, they realize they weren't strictly needed and might get frustrated and decide not to help anymore. Yikes!

Email Digest

Incoming text messages the system doesn't understand are compiled and sent to admins and captains in a digest email no more than once per hour.

Subscribe to this digest by enabling the Notification failed admin notification on your adorer account.

You can also view these messages at Admin » Text Messages. Learn more.

The Exception to the Rule

We understand that sometimes administrators want their adorers to respond to bulk or individual text messages.

To help with this scenario, we automatically suppress the automated response immediately after sending a custom message to the adorer. (They are still included in the email digest.)

For example:

  1. An admin sends a custom message to an adorer.
  2. The adorer sends a response that the system doesn't understand.
  3. We Adore Him doesn't send the automated message.

However, this is a one-time behavior. Any subsequent unknown messages will trigger the automatic response.

Here's another example:

  1. We Adore Him sends a substitute invitation.
  2. An admin sends a custom message to an adorer.
  3. The adorer sends a response that the system doesn't understand.
  4. We Adore Him doesn't send the automated message.
  5. The adorer sends another message that the system doesn't understand.
  6. We Adore Him sends the automated response asking the adorer to reply with YES or NO to the substitute invitation, as usual.

Disabling the Auto-Response

There might be situations where you want to suppress the auto-response text message completely, e.g., while conducting a survey or for some other reason.

Please note that we discourage this for the reasons outlined above.

Turn off the auto-response with the Enable the failed text message response field at Admin » Settings » Miscellaneous.
