Setting Up Donations
How do I set up donations with Stripe?
Donations go to your parish's own Stripe account. Setting them up takes a few minutes in Stripe and a few fields at Admin » Settings » Donations.
Stripe changes its dashboard often. If a step below doesn't match what you see, please let us know so we can update it.
Connecting Stripe
-
Create a Stripe account for your parish, or log in to the one you have. Choose Nonprofit Organization as the business type, and have your parish's EIN handy. For the bank account, use the parish's account or a separate one just for adoration.
Stripe also asks for a representative's name, date of birth, home address, job title, and the last four digits of their Social Security number. This only verifies who is opening the account, and it has nothing to do with that person's own taxes.
-
In Stripe, open Business details and set the statement descriptor to your chapel's name, such as ST MARY ADORATION. It is what adorers see on their card statements.
-
Make sure your Stripe dashboard is in live mode, not a sandbox or test mode, before copying any keys. Live keys start with
pk_live_orrk_live_. -
Open Developers » API keys and copy the Publishable key, which starts with
pk_live_. Paste it into the Publishable key field at Admin » Settings » Donations. -
On the same Stripe page, click Create restricted key, name it We Adore Him, and give it these permissions, leaving everything else at None:
- Checkout Sessions: Write
- Customers: Write
- Prices: Read
- Subscriptions: Write
Click Create key and copy the key, which starts with
rk_live_. Stripe shows it only once, so paste it right away into the Secret key field at Admin » Settings » Donations. -
In Stripe, open Product catalog and add a product named after your chapel, such as Donation to St. Mary's Adoration Chapel, since adorers see this name when they check out. Choose Recurring, enter $1.00 USD as the amount, and choose Monthly as the billing period. Leave the product's own statement descriptor blank, since it would replace the one you set in Business details. Then save it.
-
Open the product, click its price, and copy the Price ID, which starts with
price_. Be careful not to copy the product's ID, which starts withprod_. -
Paste it into the Price ID field at Admin » Settings » Donations, and click Save. We Adore Him checks the keys and the price with Stripe and tells you if anything needs fixing.
Why $1.00? An adorer who gives $25 a month receives 25 of this $1.00 price, so one price works for every amount.
Trying It Out
Open your own dashboard, enter an amount in the donation form, and click Donate. Stripe's checkout page should open with your parish's name. You can leave that page without entering a card, and nothing is charged.
Your Parish's Name and Logo
Adorers enter their payment details on Stripe's secure checkout page, which displays your parish's name and logo from your Stripe account. The name comes from the business name in Business details, the same page as the statement descriptor. Set your icon, logo, and brand color under Branding.
Changing Stripe Accounts
Each adorer's monthly donation lives in the Stripe account they gave through, so We Adore Him won't let you switch to a different Stripe account while adorers are donating. Cancel their donations first, then enter the new account's keys and price. Adorers can then start a new monthly donation from their dashboard.
